U of M Pediatrics Award - Masonic Children's Hospital

St. Paul, Minn. (May 30, 2006) – Tom Votel, president and CEO of Ergodyne, and his wife Barb recently were honored with the University Pediatrics Foundation Imagine Award during WineFest, an annual benefit supporting the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics.

The Imagine Award was presented to the Votels by Cities 97 co-hosts Brian Turner and Lee Valsvik at the event’s Fine Wine dinner, which took place on May 13 at the Historic Depot in Minneapolis. Every year the University of Minnesota selects an Imagine Award recipient or couple who demonstrates a commitment to the Department of Pediatrics and/or the University Pediatrics Foundation.

“Tom and Barb have spent nearly two decades dedicating time, talent and financial contributions that have made an enormous impact on children’s health,” said Stacy Rubsam, University Pediatrics Foundation Board Chair. “Their efforts for the Minnesota Cystic Fibrosis Center have been generous and long standing, and we’re proud to present them with the Imagine Award.”

The Votels became dedicated to fundraising to support cystic fibrosis research seventeen years ago, following their infant daughter Chelsea’s diagnosis with the disease. Every other year, the Votels throw a Mid Winter Gala to raise funds for the work done by Dr. Warren Warwick and the Minnesota Cystic Fibrosis Center. Last year, the Gala raised nearly $50,000. Through the Mid Winter Gala, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Breath of Life Gala, 65 Roses Golf Classic and other efforts, the Votels have raised more than $1 million.

Tom Votel has been a Minnesota chapter board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since 1989 and is a former chapter president. His company, Ergodyne, created “Be Tenacious” bracelets for the CFF, which are sold worldwide with sales proceeds benefiting the foundation. Ergodyne also started the Minnesota 65 Roses Golf Classic nine years ago with partner Guy Carpenter. The 2005 classic raised around $175,000 for the CFF.
