    The Utilities sector comprises establishments engaged in the provision of the following utility services: electric power, natural gas, steam supply, water supply, and sewage removal. Within this sector, the specific activities associated with the utility services provided vary by utility: electric power includes generation, transmission, and distribution; natural gas includes distribution; steam supply includes provision and/or distribution; water supply includes treatment and distribution; and sewage removal includes collection, treatment and disposal of waste through sewer systems and sewage treatment facilities.

    Subsector 2211

    This industry group comprises establishments primarily engaged in generating, transmitting, and/or distributing electric power.

    Subsector 2213

    This industry group includes establishments classified in the following NAICS industries: 22131, Water Supply and Irrigation Systems; 22132, Sewage Treatment Facilities; and 22133, Steam and Air-Conditioning Supply.

    Subsector 2212

    This industry comprises: (1) establishments primarily engaged in operating gas distribution systems (e.g., mains, meters); (2) establishments known as gas marketers that buy gas from the well and sell it to a distribution system; (3) establishments known as gas brokers or agents that arrange the sale of gas over gas distribution systems operated by others; and (4) establishments primarily engaged in transmitting and distributing gas to final consumers.

    NIOSH Issues First Approval for Closed-Circuit Escape Respirator Under New Requirements

    NIOSH has issued the first approval for a respirator that complies with the new requirements for closed-circuit escape respirators (CCERs). The approval comes approximately nine months ahead of the deadline established for companies to transition to the new requirements. The new requirements are intended to strengthen emergency respiratory protection for workers relying on the devices during life-threatening escape situations.

    Top three work-related injuries are: sprains and strains (with 1,980 cases), soreness & pain (with 500 cases) and fractures (with 400 cases). These injuries made up 67% of all injuries in this WorkZone.*

    Of these, 520 resulted in employees missing three to five days of work and 1,630 resulted in employees missing thirty-one days or more.*

    There were 22 work-related fatalities in 2012.*
