015 - Building A Cold Weather Layering System for Winter Work

Transcript

Al Buczkowski:  Welcome everybody, to Radio Free Tenacity, the Voice of Worker Safety. Talking today about staying warm and productive in cold conditions. Now, you might think, what's the big deal? It's cold outside, I'm going to find myself the warmest gear I can. Boom, end of podcast. But what you might not know, is that the number one problem workers have when working out in cold conditions is... plot twist, overheating.

Al Buczkowski: That's because once you start working and you do not have a smart layering system, there is no place for that heat to go. And you're in for a sweaty spiral of regret. We're going to start with base layers. It's all about that base, baby. So what you're looking for there is fabric that is stretchy, a little bit loose, so you can let that airflow.

Al Buczkowski: But most importantly, it's going to be moisture wicking and quick drying. Because like I just got done saying, moisture is your mortal enemy when it comes to staying warm in the cold, right? And here at Ergodyne, we have a couple different selections for you. We've got a lightweight. We've got a mid weight depending on how cold exactly is your working environment.

Al Buczkowski: All right. So that's your base layer. Moving on to the mid layer. And what does that look like? Essentially, that's going to be what you're wearing to work that day, right? So your work pants, work shirt, maybe a hoodie. Something Ergodyne is offering is our heated vest, which is awesome because that gives you a lot more control over your temperature.

Al Buczkowski: And it's specifically built to be a mid layer. So it's low profile, not bulky. It's going to fit under a jacket. All right gang, quick review. You've got your base layer, you've got your mid layer, on to the outer layer, right? So the function of the outer layer, super important. It is going to offer you weather protection. Wind. Rain. Snow. Cats. Dogs. Whatever it is, this is going to be your shield.

Al Buczkowski: But it's also important that it remains breathable to let that moisture out that your body is creating, Okay? Here at Ergodyne, we have our very popular winter work jacket and bibs. They are tested to the tundra like temperatures. Ergodyne Team Members love them. You'll often see videos and pictures of them out on the weekends snowmobiling, ice fishing, whatever it is, because this layer is just that good.

Al Buczkowski: All right. And there you have it. Quick review... base layer for moisture control. Mid layer for insulation, right? And your outer layer for weather resistance. If you'd like to know more about proper layering, smart layering in cold weather, head on over to ergodyne.com/cold-stress. There you'll find all of our great solutions. Al Buczkowski: And again, thank you so much for watching and listening. Stay safe out there people.
